Themes of duality are throughout the video (and are event present within Dorian Gray).īlue: Also in the V broadcast, Taemin explained that the blue roses are an indicator that what you’re seeing is not reality. Externally, he may appear fine, but inside there’s a war waging. He’s trying to reconcile the person he was with who he has become. The Taemin who robs the liquor store is so sure and arrogant while the Taemin at the car crash is apprehensive, questioning himself, trying to come to terms with what he’s done. The part of him tempted toward the crime and the part of him that suffers because of it. I think this is done in that the image communicates two halves of a person, a duality. During a V broadcast, Taemin said something about this teaser perfectly summarizing the video. And then he drops it, in suggestion of suicide.ĭuality: One of the first teasers we got for this comeback was that image of the two Taemins kissing. While he still stands on the roof of the car, he holds a lighter. The video concludes with Taemin pouring gasoline on the car (which I see as the symbol of his crime). In the body of this analysis I will further discuss the ways in which unreality and guilt intersect. His guilt magnifies his crime and he begins to see himself in the place of the girl. He wrestles with this issue within himself, and creates a sort of unreality to deal with it. In the video, we see Taemin both plagued and unrepentant. The video chronicles the effects of the crime, including the increasing weight of his guilt. Taemin commits a crime, robbing a liquor store at gunpoint. PYN is probably not a retelling of this novel, but I nevertheless see similarities. In destroying the painting, he destroys himself. But Dorian’s real motivation in destroying the painting was not to clear his conscience, but to destroy it–to absolve guilt by ridding himself of the thing that made him feel guilty. Before I read the novel, I always thought this was a way for him to clear his conscience, to find redemption. At the end of the novel, he famously destroys his portrait. His portrait bears the marks of not only age, but the corruption of sin on his soul. Dorian remains young and beautiful, but no longer innocent, as he lives a life of hedonism. After his portrait is painted, he himself sees how beautiful he is, and wishes that he would remain young and beautiful forever, that his portrait would age instead. At the beginning of the novel, Dorian Gray is young, innocent, and beautiful. I’m sure most of you are familiar with its plot, but I’ll give a little refresher. The Picture of Dorian Gray: To introduce the plot I’ve perceived from the video, I will recall Oscar Wilde’s novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. Both surreality and unsteadiness are key themes in the video, as I will explain. More than communicate this fantastical mood, it introduces the concept of tilting back and forth, of a constant unsteadiness. At every given moment we’re reminded of the surreality of it. ![]() We are meant to tilt and change with the video. The audience is not meant to be at peace. The constant interruptions almost disturb, almost disrupt. The resulting effect is that the video becomes dreamlike, surreal, fantastical. 25 speeds, I can’t clearly make out some of the flashes. Instead of fluid scenes, we get short flashes of one image to the next. ![]() ![]() The camera work is extremely important in this video. There’s a complex storyline and symbolism throughout. The whole video has a consistent aesthetic and mood. Link here, if you’re interested.įilm:This music video is exactly what I consider a piece of art. I also did a previous post about the teaser video, though a lot of my conclusions have changed. This post is based off of the video from the official SMTown Youtube channel. The views presented in this analysis are a part of my own individual interpretation of the video, which means they are subject to error. Taemin’s Press Your Number MV (Music Video Analysis) Pt.
